This is the one for which I am most well known. My famous Five-Flavor Beef will tempt even those who are vegetarians. Everyone will beg you to make this all the time, but don't over do it. Make their mouth water. This is a fantastic sandwich filler. My daughter makes it for her husband just for lunches. If they don't like this one, then they don't like food!
4-6 lb roast (sirloin is best)
1 cup soy sauce
1 cup water
2 sticks cinnamon
5 or 6 anise seeds
1 cup sugar
1 cup dry Cream Sherry
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 Brown roast in dutch oven. 2 Remove browned meat to platter. Add soy, sugar, water, cinnamon, and anise. Stir until sugar is melted. 3 If cooking in crockpot, also add sherry. 4 Place meat in Dutch Oven (or crockpot) and turn several times to coat all sides. 5 Bring liquid to boil, place cover on Dutch Oven and turn heat to medium-low. Cook for 2 hours and then add Sherry. If cooking in crockpot, turn on low and cook for 7-9 hours. 6 When done, place meat on platter. 7 Strain liquid and place in large pot. Bring to boil. 8 Mix cornstarch with water and add to liquid. Stir until thickened. Serve with hot roast. Tomorrow, make roast beef sandwiches....they're great!
